A delightful property in North Staffordshire has come top in Airbnb’s 10 most wish-listed UK holiday homes.
Alton forest lodge – in Dimmingsdale near Alton – was voted number one by Brits lusting after staycations in the UK.
The lodge, run by Denise Cameron and a group of friends, beat a host of other properties including a beachfront house in Lancashire, a windmill in Kent and a romantic cabin in Hemel Hempstead.
Every year, Airbnb releases a list of its most wish-listed holiday rentals, which usually includes pool villas on tropical beaches and stunning mansions in Mediterranean hotspots.
However, due to coronavirus, this year’s list is totally different – with every one of the top ten destinations in the UK.
Denise said: “We are absolutely delighted to have been named number one. We didn’t actually realise until a customer got in touch to tell us.”
Denise, 38, from Scotland and a group of friends who all live in North Staffordshire, bought the former youth hostel two years ago and marketed the property through Airbnb in October 2018.
She said: “When we purchased the property it was a rundown brick building full of dormitories that needed some work. We spent eight or nine months renovating it and have been open two years this coming October.
“To be honest, we took a punt with no idea of what to expect but it has worked. The lodge is booked out all of the time. Even with Covid 19 we are still booked up until January/February next year.
“We are absolutely chuffed to bits – not only to be in the top ten, but to be named number one is amazing!”
Alton forest lodge is a woodland building which sleeps up to 12 people. It has a traditional wood fired hot tub overlooking the surrounding forest, while inside there is an open plan kitchen with a large state-of-the-art cooker and a log burmer in the lounge.
The lodge also has three large bedrooms and two bathrooms, as well as gas central heating.
