The 30-year-old Wales international, who is currently sidelined with an Achilles injury, was recently held up as an example of a Championship player earning exactly that figure by The Mirror, since joining the Potters from Liverpool for £13m in 2016.
So he called The Mirror’s Andy Dunn to explain Stoke are not paying him that amount.
“That has been the widely-accepted figure since he signed a new contract in 2018, having joined Stoke from Liverpool two years earlier,” wrote Dunn.
“Joe, as politely as you could wish for, wanted to explain that his salary was not nearly that amount.
“And by the end of the pleasant conversation, I was happy to acknowledge we had all got it wrong.”
