Own goal – Stoke City grateful for help in taking lead against Cardiff City

Stoke City broke the boredom here at the bet365 with the opening goal of the game just after the midway point of the first half.

The game was going nowhere fast, in truth, until a 26th minute corner swung in from the left by Jordan Thompson.

Heads went up, including Nick Powell’s, and the ball struck his marker Callum Paterson to roll into the back of the net to give Stoke a 1-0 lead.

Powell was almost apologetic in his celebration, but home fans certainly weren’t.

The game had only thrown up one previous moment to get supporters out of their seats.

That came as early as the sixth minute when Sam Clucas, like a left-footed Kevin de Bruyne, bent a beauty of a pass inside retreating defender Sean Morrison.

That left Tyrese Campbell through left of goal and the odds were on him scoring, but goalkeeper Alex Smithies narrowed the angle quickly and precisely to block the eventual shot.

Campbell was nearly gifted a second chance at 1-0, but couldn’t quite make contact when stretching for the ball with only the keeper to beat.

Cardiff’s only real attempt at 0-0 came when Danny Ward, replacing the injured Lee Tomlin, was released down the right channel for a shot well smothered by Jack Butland.
