People with Covid-19 symptoms urged to book a test at new Burslem centre

Another testing site has opened in Stoke-on-Trent to help tackle soaring coronavirus rates.

People can book an appointment at the new facility, based on the Synectics Solutions car park in Burslem.

Officials stress it is just for those who are displaying symptoms, such as a high temperature, a new continuous cough or a loss of sense of smell or taste.

It is in addition to existing testing sites at the bet365 Stadium, Fenton Manor and the Regent Centre in Regent Road, Hanley.

The expansion of testing capacity locally comes as more than 200 new Covid-19 cases were confirmed in Stoke-on-Trent on Friday alone. That means the total number of reported cases in the city since the pandemic began has topped 5,200.

Paul Edmondson-Jones, director of social care, health integration and well-being at Stoke-on-Trent City Council, has urged residents to stick to the rules.

Responding to the latest coronavirus rates, he tweeted: “We have broken through 400 per 100,000 and some are seriously ill. What will you do (or not do) tomorrow?”

The new Burslem site is classed as a ‘walk-through’ centre, which means it can be accessed by people who don’t have their own cars.

Those being tested will be required to follow public health measures, including social distancing, not travelling by taxi or public transport, practising good personal hygiene and wearing a face covering throughout, including while travelling to and from the centre.

Health minister Lord Bethell said: “New walk-in sites like this one makes it even easier to get a test, no matter where you live.

“If you have symptoms of coronavirus, I urge you to book a test today and follow the advice of NHS Test and Trace if you are contacted to protect others and stop the spread of the virus.”

The testing centre is being operated in partnership with Sodexo and will offer self-administered tests.

Sean Haley, regional chairman of Sodexo UK and Ireland, said: “Sodexo teams have moved quickly to set up Covid-19 testing centres as part of the industry-wide effort to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic. The Burslem site will mean more people can be tested.
