`Phased out’ – not looking good for former Stoke City favourite

It sounds like former Stoke City favourite Charlie Adam will be on his bike this summer.

He is approaching the end of his one-year contract at Reading and his prospects of another deal appear grim.

So says Jonathan Low – Reading reporter for @berkshirelive – who expects Adam to be on the bench against Stoke this weekend.

“He’s being phased out, I’m afraid,” says Low .

“He was brilliant over Christmas and New Year, but hasn’t kept his form up.

“His last start was mid January so that says all you need to know.

“He has been used as a sub since then. I think Bowen already has one eye on next season and looking at the players who could still play beyond the summer and I don’t think Charlie is one of them. He’ll be off in the summer.”

Bowen, of course, is former Stoke coach Mark Bowen, Reading manager since earlier this season after previously being their director of football.

His appointment as manager received a lukewarm response at the time from fans, so how is he regarded now?

“I think generally fans are still coming on side,” said Low.

“After the Wigan defeat there were loud calls for his head, but generally he has done well and is taking the club in the right direction.

“He got off to a great start, kicked on over Xmas and New Year, but the form dropped off in Jan and Feb.

“He says the right things and is open and honest not just with the media but most importantly the players. They are benefiting from his clear line of communication.”
