Pickpockets use map to distract OAP seconds after he withdrew ‘large sum of money’ from Stoke-on-Trent cash machine



Police are hunting pickpockets who used a map to distract a pensioner seconds after he had withdrawn a large sum of money from a Stoke-on-Trent cash machine.

The elderly victim had just used the ATM at Barclays in Longton when he was approached by a man and woman asking for directions.

He then discovered his money had been taken out of his jacket.

It is believed the suspects are Eastern European.

Now officers are appealing for witnesses to come forward following the incident, which happened in The Strand at midday on Monday (March 16).

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: “We are investigating after an elderly man had a large sum of cash stolen from him by pickpockets in Longton on Monday.

“The man had withdrawn cash from Barclays in The Strand at midday when he was approached by a man and woman who spoke to him asking for directions.

“They spoke with East European accents and the woman had blonde hair.

“He noticed afterwards the money had been taken from his jacket pocket.”

One eye-witness said: “I’ve just been in Barclays and an elderly gentleman has just come in saying he has just been robbed at the cash point. It was the second one that day.”
