Police arrest Stoke-on-Trent man, 50, after arsonist strikes multiple times in one night

Police have made an arrest after multiple fires were started across Stoke-on-Trent in one night.

Firefighters were called to streets across Burslem and Tunstall last night after residents spotted flames and smoke.

It transpired a number of sheds and bins had been deliberately set alight, including in Louise Street, Burslem, and Meir Street, Tunstall, in the hour before midnight (June 9).

An eye-witness said: “I saw a drunk man setting fire to sheds in the area. The police were out looking for him. The 7-11 shop was set on fire too.

“I could just see smoke and the fire engine from down the street. My mum’s shed was set on fire too.”

Another resident said: “I got woken up about 2.30am to banging. I looked out of the window to see three police cars.”

Now officers have confirmed a 50-year-old man has been detained on suspicion of arson.

He remains in custody for questioning this afternoon as an investigation continues.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: “A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after we received reports of a number of fires in Stoke-on-Trent last night.

“Officers attended Louise Street, Burslem and Meir Street, Tunstall, after being called shortly after 11.30pm last night.
