Police have been called to a North Staffordshire canal following the discovery of child’s bike near the towpath.
Officers were dispatched to the Trent and Mersey Canal near Kidsgrove earlier this evening.
An investigation to establish the owner of the bike and why it was left near the towpath has been launched and officers have reportedly carried out some door to door inquiries.
A Staffordshire Police spokesman confirmed officers were trying to establish why the bike had been left and said more information would be released this evening.
Kyle Robinson, ward councillor for Talke and Butt Lane, posted an update to reassure residents there had been no reports of a missing child in the area.
He said: “I have just spoken to Staffordshire Police and a child has NOT been reported missing in Kidsgrove. A small child’s bike has been found on the canal and some concern has been raised as to who this belongs to and why it has been left.
“The police are doing what they can to speak to as many local residents as possible who may have information about who owns the bike.
“Please don’t jump to conclusions and the police have asked that we let them do their job. If anything changes I will post out an update. If you do have any information please call Staffordshire Police on 101.”
