Police have made three arrests after staff at a closed North Staffordshire hotel stumbled onto a burglary in progress.
Staff at Clayton Lodge Hotel, which has been shut since last March, were carrying out a routine check of the premises yesterday when they discovered the venue was being burgled.
Officers were called at around 1.05pm and were at the scene in Clayton Road, Clayton, within 10 minutes when four people fled out of the back of the property.
Two – a 42-year-old woman and a 17-year-old girl, both from Leek – were stopped immediately and were arrested on suspicion of burglary from a business.
After a short chase, a 31-year-old Cheadle man was caught in nearby Waverley Place and was also arrested on suspicion of burglary from a business.
The fourth person was able to evade officers.
A Staffordshire Police spokesman revealed the bar and reception areas of the hotel were damaged during the incident and said the three arrested remained in custody last night.
He added: “We received a call at about 1.05pm yesterday (January 4) relating to the Clayton Lodge Hotel on Clayton Road, Clayton, in Newcastle-under-Lyme.
