Police launch investigation after yobs start fire inside North Staffordshire social club

Police officers have launched an investigation after lockdown flouting yobs started a number of small fires inside a North Staffordshire working men’s club.

Firefighters from Sandyford and Kidsgrove raced to the Kidsgrove Workingmen’s Club on Hardingswood Road shortly before 8pm last night (May 27) after receiving reports of a fire at the building.

The once popular clubhouse is currently disused as it is set to be bulldozed and relocated to a more modern facility in Meadows Road as part of a plan to bring a new Lidl to the town.

A Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said crews spent hours at the scene tackling the blazes before handing the incident over to police officers.

They said: “We were called to a disused social club in Kidsgrove at 8pm last night.

“We were called to reports of a fire but when we got there we found a couple of small fires so it is now being investigated by the police.

“It was Sandyford and Kidsgrove that attended the scene and they were there for a couple of hours.”

Families are currently being encouraged to stay at home unless travelling to and from work, completing unlimited exercise, sunbathing, or shopping as part of the coronavirus crisis.
