Police want to ID this man after worker at Staffordshire toy store attacked

Police have issued a CCTV image of a man they want to identify after a worker at a Staffordshire toy store was attacked following a row over payment.

Officers were called to Smyths toy store on the Ventura Retail Park in Ventura Park Road, Tamworth, at around 5.10pm on February 19.

A customer had come to the store, which is only open for collections, and started getting aggressive when a disagreement broke out with a member of staff.

The man had tried to purchase an item online via his mobile phone according to current Covid restrictions, but the worker questioned whether the payment had been successfully taken.

Then, the customer barged past the staff member and grabbed the toys he’d said he purchased, which totalled around £30, before punching the staff member in the head as he left the store.

The worker did not require medical treatment.

Along with the CCTV image, a Staffordshire Police spokesman issued an appeal for witnesses and provided a description of the man.

He said: “A white male described as 5ft and 7 or 8in tall with a goatee-style beard and wearing a black cap, black, large, puffy coat and black tracksuit bottoms became aggressive with staff when trying to make a purchase.

“If anybody recognises the man in the picture, or witnessed what happened, send a direct message to Staffordshire Police on Facebook or Twitter or anonymously contact the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
