Popular North Staffordshire pub launches lockdown takeaway service – and you can order cocktails too!

A Biddulph boozer has launched a takeaway service so regulars don’t have to miss out on their favourite pub grub – or cocktail – during the second lockdown.

Landlord Paul Brown has been running popular pub The Roaring Meg, on Pennine Way, with his wife Karen for the past eight years.

But the pandemic, including different restrictions, ever-changing guidance and now another national lockdown, have been hard on the duo and their business.

To stay connected with their customers, and keep the pub going through this tough time, Paul and Karen have decided to bring back their takeaway service.

“It just feels like another step back,” said Paul. “We thought things were going OK, and we were coming out of it, but then this happened.

“Tier 1 was managable for us, but when we were put into tier 2 it was tough and we were basically losing money.”

Paul and Karen have now re-launched their delivery and collection service. In the spring, their Sunday lunch takeaway service proved popular with new and regular customers – and now they have cocktails on the menu too for just £6 each!

“We began doing takeaways quite late into the first lockdown and I wish we’d done it sooner,” explained Paul. “We started with Sunday lunches and it became quite popular, so we have decided to bring these back, as well as some other things, for the second lockdown.

“We’ve now got our street food menu which includes things like loaded fries and wings, and then we are also offering cocktails.

“When we were open we had a lot of people coming in for our cocktails. They’re really popular because they complete a meal really nicely. We have different cocktails available at the moment including Sex on the Beach, Pornstar Martinis and Snowballs.”

And if you were missing the pub’s entertainment, their weekly quiz, hosted by Chris ‘Ecke’ Exon, has moved online – and it’s been attracting players from all over the world!

“Ecke has been doing the quiz for about 20 years now,” explained Paul, “way before we took over the pub. It was held every Monday night and then when the first lockdown happened, he took it online and carried on.

“At the peak of it, we had around 500 teams from all over the world taking part. Some people were originally from the area and have now moved away, but others were complete strangers who had found our quiz but lived in places like America and Norway.

“He has taken it online again and people love it. We are lucky to have such good regulars who still came in when we had to put the restrictions in place and were really good with all of them.”

If you fancy a takeaway and you live in the Biddulph area, The Roaring Meg can deliver to your door. If you’re further away, you can collect.

“We are just delivering to Biddulph and the surrounding areas, but we also offer collection too,” said Paul.

“We had someone travel all the way from Eccleshall to pick up an order. He said he had visited us for a meal once and loved it, so that was a massive compliment.

“We are also now taking bookings for Christmas and our festive menu is on our Facebook page too – so far we have had a really good reaction to that.

“There’s a lot of uncertainty at the moment but we are already preparing to reopen for Christmas. We can’t wait to decorate and hopefully welcome people back. We want to lift their spirits now and give them something to look forward to.”

Delivery – within the Biddulph area – and collection is available at The Roaring Meg on every Friday and Saturday from 4pm to 8pm and every Sunday from 12pm to 4pm. You can find out more about their takeaway service and the weekly quiz on their Facebook page.
