Port Vale fans’ chief will wish Nathan Smith the best whatever the decision

Port Vale Supporters Club chairman Mark Porter is keeping his fingers crossed the club can hang on to Nathan Smith but would wish the defender all the best if he moves on.

The 24 year old is out of contract and Vale are waiting to see if he will accept their offer.

There is likely to be interest in a player who has made 199 appearances since making his debut four years ago and impressed in the heart of the defence. But Porter is hoping the Vale youth graduate, from Madeley, will be part of the team John Askey is building for next season.

He said: “You have to wish everybody well who goes on and plays at a higher level.

“If he does go then you have to wish him all the best. If he stays then get behind him and hopefully he can play at a higher level with the Vale.

“One thing he has to remember though, when he is making his decision, is we are in unprecedented times. He has been offered a contract at the Vale and would he be better off taking that and staying locally rather than moving where you don’t always know if it will work?

“We couldn’t have any complaints if he goes, but if he stays then fantastic.”

Meanwhile Porter has praised the club’s owners for offering seven players contracts despite the financial crisis in the lower divisions.

Vale are bucking the trend in a division in which fewer deals are being offered to try to cut costs.

Shaun Brisley, Mark Cullen and Cristian Montano are all close to officially signing – and David Amoo, Rhys Browne, Tom Conlon and Smith have also been offered deals.

Under EFL rules, players have until June 16 to accept or decline the deals.

Porter added: “Being in a situation where we are offering players contracts in times like this is fantastic. I have no complaints on that score, it’s very positive.

“If we can keep that team together I think we will have a good chance of promotion next season.”
