Port Vale latest on Nathan Smith contract talks

John Askey says Port Vale can only wait to see if they will be able to sign defender Nathan Smith on a new contract.

The 23 year old’s current deal is up in the summer and, because he turns 24 in April, he would be able to leave on a free transfer.

The Vale have spoken to the centre half about his future, but the home-grown defender is entitled to weigh up his options at the end of the season.

The manager said: “We’ll just keep speaking to Nathan and his agent. We can’t do any more than we have done, so it is up to Nathan now and what he wants to do.

“At the moment he is happy, he has been playing well and I think he has improved as a player since I have been here. Hopefully he will stay because he is at the right age and, if we want to progress as a football club, we need players like Nathan.”

Smith from Madeley says he is happy to concentrate on his football for now and trying to help the Vale into the play-offs.

He said: “First and foremost is Saturday, to get the three points to get into the play-offs. Then you can keep taking it from there. Me and the gaffer can keep having conversations. I think we understand each other well, we don’t hide anything from each other. We are very honest and I think we know what’s going on, going forward.

“I can’t deny how happy I am here. It is a local club, I don’t have to travel far, friends and family are around here and this is all I have ever known. So, I can’t deny I am happy here at Port Vale and looking forward to playing football.”

The Vale return to action this afternoon when they are at home to Scunthorpe. Vale go into the game outside the play-offs only on goal difference after a six-game unbeaten run.
