Port Vale set to complete deals for out-of-contract players

Port Vale look set to complete deals with several of their out-of-contract players as John Askey puts his squad together for 2020/21.

David Amoo, Rhys Browne, Shaun Brisley, Tom Conlon, Mark Cullen and Cristain Montano have all indicated they are accepting the club’s offers.

But Askey has said that, while he hasn’t completely ruled out the chances of Nathan Smith also staying, he has started the search for a replacement after revealing the 24 year old has had interest from Championship and League One clubs.

Last season’s deals for Vale’s out of contract players run out today. Those who were released at the end of the season are entitled to ‘severance pay’ through July to help them as they look for another club.

But in Smith’s case, he doesn’t qualify for that severance pay because he has been offered an improved deal on his previous contract.

Askey has made clear he has no issue with Smith personally and appreciates his honesty in saying he is still looking at his options.

That gives the manager the chance to look at potential replacements in case the home grown centre half does move on.

The manager is looking for up to six new signings, including a goalkeeper and potentially two strikers.

He made room in his squad by releasing Will Atkinson, Callum Evans, Kieran Kennedy, Ryan Lloyd, Jonny Maddison, and Jordan Archer.

Two of his likely targets are Jake Taylor and Mitch Clark. Taylor had an outstanding spell on loan from Nottingham Forest this past season, scoring seven goals from midfield before his season was cut short by a knee injury in January.

Clark was a regular on loan from Aston Villa in 2018/19 then returned on loan at the end of January 2020, this time from Leicester City.

If Vale can get him back for a third spell, he would provide quality competition for the right and left back spots and can also play in central defence.
