Port Vale sign former Macclesfield and Southport defender David Fitzpatrick

Port Vale have signed left back David Fitzpatrick on a one-year deal.

The 30 year old, who played for John Askey at Macclesfield, is a free agent after leaving the Silkmen at the end of last season.

But he will have fond memories of Vale Park after scoring a spectacular goal there in Macclesfield’s 1-0 win in April 2019, a result that helped his side to survival in the Football League.

He was in the youth system at Stockport County before spells with Northwich and New Mills.

He moved on to Southport before switching to Macclesfield and helping them to promotion to the Football League under Askey in 2017/18.

His deal almost completes Vale’s pre-season transfer business. The club also need a keeper but are set to bring in Dino Visser after he impressed on trial.

Askey has also brought in Zak Mills, Danny Whitehead, Devante Rodney and Theo Robinson.

Meanwhile, the Vale return to action on Wednesday afternoon when they have a behind-closed-doors friendly against Nottingham Forest.
