Port Vale sign Jake Taylor on long-term deal from Nottingham Forest

He’s back! Port Vale have fought off competition to sign Jake Taylor on a long-term deal from Nottingham Forest.

The 22-year-old has signed a three-and-a-half year contract after the club beat Grimsby to his signature.

The Mancunian was a success on loan at Vale last season, scoring seven times in 25 games under John Askey before his season was cut short by injury.

Vale had transfer offers turned down last January and also inquired about Taylor in the summer. But Forest were keen to take a look at him in pre-season and, by the time they decided he was available to go on loan, Vale had already filled their squad.

He went to Scunthorpe on loan but was recalled by Forest at the start of the transfer window and made available on a deal that is weighted more towards a significant sell on clause than up front fee.

So, Taylor will be competing with Luke Joyce, Tom Conlon, Scott Burgess, Manny Oyeleke and Danny Whitehead in the Vale’s central midfield.

With Oyeleke injured, interim boss Pugh went with Luke Joyce and Tom Conlon in a two-man central midfield as he started with a 4-4-2 in Saturday’s 3-0 win at home to Grimsby. He changed that to a midfield three in the second half as Scott Burgess replaced injured striker Devante Rodney.

The Vale return to action on Tuesday when they are away to Sunderland in the Papa John’s Trophy (6pm).
