Port Vale striker playing for contract and play-off place

Port Vale striker Mark Cullen is desperate to pass a fitness test to give him a chance of continuing his impressive goals record as the Vale travel to Cheltenham tomorrow.

The 27 year old has scored eight goals in just 11 starts, and 13 substitute appearances, since joining the Vale on a free from Blackpool in the summer.

He picked up a knock in last Saturday’s 2-2 draw at home to Scunthorpe but is hoping to keep his place for the first of Vale’s ten remaining games as they try to secure a place in the  play-offs.

The striker said: “I got a dead leg at the weekend but hopefully I will be all right.

“I’ve had it a couple of times where you are in and out of the team. When you get there, you want to try to stay there as long as you can, so I will be doing all I can to get out there.”

Cullen says he is also playing for his future because he is out of contract at the end of the season. He hasn’t spoken to the club about that but says he is concentrating on helping the team by finishing the season strongly.

He said: “Everyone who is out of contract is playing for another deal, whether that be here or somewhere else. It is out of our hands. All you can do is try to perform the best you can and see what happens.”

Vale, who are seven games unbeaten, have already won at Cheltenham this season. They triumphed 3-1 in the FA Cup in November, thanks to Tom Pope’s second-half hat-trick.

But the Robins are two places and seven points above the Vale, in fifth, having won their last five games.

Cullen added: “It is one we can look forward to and look to test ourselves against a team higher in the league than us.

“But we have shown this season that we can more than perform against the teams above us.

“So we are going there full of confidence ourselves and hopefully we can get the three points.”
