Pub bids to open huge car park beer garden until 1am to ‘boost business’ post lockdown

A pub’s bid to boost its trade post coronavirus is set to be rejected.

The White Horse in Nantwich has applied for temporary event notices that would extend business hours from 11.30pm to 1am on five weekends across April and May.

Starting from April 16, the bar wants to be able to host up to 499 people in its Pillory Street car park, serving alcohol and playing background music.

A series of applications to Cheshire East Council says it is ‘extra trading hours in an attempt to boost business post-Covid crisis’.

However, the council’s environmental protection team fear similar events in the pub car park have drawn complaints from neighbours.

Mark Vyse, environmental protection officer, has lodged an objection to the licence.

He said: “Given the premises’ close proximity to existing residential properties and the history of previous complaints from events held in the rear car park it is my professional opinion that the noise generated from the proposed extension of hours and activity listed is likely to lead to significant noise disturbance to local residents.

“There is likely to be noise generated from patrons leaving the establishment at 1am disturbing local residents.

“Therefore I object to the granting of the temporary event notice.”

There have been no objections from local neighbours or Cheshire Police.

Cheshire East’s licensing sub-committee is due to hear evidence from Mr Vyse as well as the applicant Teracina Slaughter-Hudson when it meets on Friday.

A post on the pub’s Facebook page says it intends to open in-line with the coronavirus guidelines next week.

It states: “Please be aware that covid guidelines will be being followed, ID will be required on entry and the track and trace system will be in place.

“Please remember to respect our staff, we’ve all had a tough time during lockdown and would love to be out celebrating with you but someone’s got to be there to pour the beer right?”
