Public asked to avoid area after blaze at former rugby club


Members of the public are being asked to avoid the area around a town’s former rugby club after a blaze at the site.

Emergency services were called to the scene at the former Stafford Rugby Club in Newport Road at around 2.35pm this afternoon.

Firefighters from Stafford, Cannock and Penkridge are in attendance and using hose-reel jets to tackle the fire.

Police issued a warning to those nearby to avoid the area for the time being while the incident is dealt with.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: “Officers are currently at the scene of a fire at the old Stafford Rugby Club off Newport Road in Stafford.

“Please avoid the area.

“Anyone with any information should message Staffordshire Police on Facebook or Twitter quoting incident number 379 of September 8, call 101 or alternatively contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

A Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “Firefighters from Stafford, Cannock and Penkridge are using hose-reel jets to tackle a blaze at a former rugby club in the Castlefields area of Stafford.

“They were called to the scene at 2.35pm today (September 8).”
