UPDATE: This has now reopened
A busy stretch of the A500 in North Staffordshire is closed following a collision.
The crash has shut the southbound carriageway of the D-Road between junction 16 of the M6 and Peacock Roundabout (the A34).
The collision involves a car and a lorry – with a fuel spillage also reported.
A Highways England spokesman said: “The A500 in the West Midlands is currently closed southbound between M6 J16 and A34 near Tunstall due to a road traffic collision between a car and a lorry. There has been a large fuel spillage as a result of the collision which will require clean up.
“Emergency services including the Central Motorway Police Group are in attendance. Highways England has resources deployed to assist.
“Traffic is being diverted by local routes. Road users are advised to allow extra time for their journeys and may wish to consider alternative routes.”

Inrix, the traffic data company, said: “A500 D Road Southbound closed due to accident, a lorry and a car involved and fuel spillage between Alsager Road (Audley Turn Off, Audley) and A34 Talke Road (Talke Roundabout, Talke). Traffic is coping well.
“Affecting traffic heading away from M6 J16 towards Stoke-on-Trent.”
The accident was first reported shortly before noon.
