Ryan Shawcross may have to get more minutes under his belt – the under-23s are in Premier League 2 action against Leeds tomorrow – as he tries to get back in the frame after the best part of 18 months without regular action.
Ryan has trained and has played for the under-23s. He just needs more football, I think.
It’s more difficult for a centre-back to get up to speed (being used on the fringes) and obviously Ryan has had a long period with no football. It’s been very stop-start for him since he came back so it was really good for him get through the 23s game last weekend. Mentally that was good for him as much as anything.
He just has to build up his minutes in terms of training and playing and then we get the best version of Ryan that we get and obviously that’s what we want.
He’s worked extremely hard. It’s been a very frustrating time for him and I do feel for him but he continues to come in and work and try to get himself as fit as possible and try to get himself back playing.
That’s what we want and obviously it will be a big plus to the team if he continues to progress and make the strides that we all hope he does.
