Ryan Shawcross picks up knock in Stoke City friendly against Leeds

Stoke City captain Ryan Shawcross was forced off early in this afternoon’s friendly at home to Leeds, the club has reported.

The 32 year old was in the starting line up for the behind closed doors game at the bet365 Stadium but Stoke made a change after seven minutes.

The club report that Shawcross picked up a knock and so was replaced by fellow centre half Liam Lindsay.

Further details aren’t available at this stage but Michael O’Neill and his staff wouldn’t take any chances with players’ fitness in a pre-season game.

Stoke’s campaign begins properly on September 12 for their opening Championship fixture away to Millwall.

In an unusual pre-season, Stoke started the Carabao Cup amid their friendlies – beating Blackpool on penalties after a goalless draw at the bet365 on Saturday.

Stoke City’s team for the Leeds game was: Butland, Collins, Souttar, Shawcross (c), Fox, Mikel, Oakyel-Boothe, Campbell, Ince, Tymon, Vokes.

Subs: Nna Noukeu, Edwards, Lindsay, Gregory, Porter, Sorensen, Coates.
