Specsavers Longton says earwax problems on the rise during Covid lockdown

A Stoke-on-Trent branch of Specsavers is expanding its services for people with hearing problems after an apparent rise in the complaint during the coronavirus lockdown.

The Longton outlet of the high street chain says it’s creating new audiology services in response to high demand in the local area.

According to the chain, there has been a huge increase in the number of people experiencing hearing issues, with over 65.5 per cent of people who responded to questions from Specsavers saying they’d noticed a change in their hearing.

And earwax seems to be one of the main issues since the restrictions were brought in at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.

So the firm has taken on a new audiology director for the Longton branch to deal with this and other hearing-related trouble.

Abid Jawaid, audiology director at Longton, has plans to further expand the team and add in-demand ear wax removal services later this year.

Until now, people from the area have had to go to other branches for the treatment.

Mr Jawaid said: “We are so pleased to now launch the expansion of our services for local people in Longton – we’ve been keen to do this for a while.

“We’ve received a high influx of calls and had to redirect local people to services outside Longton, which is tricky for many. It’s great to be in a position to offer more, especially for those with limited mobility or who do not want to travel.

“We’ve been providing hearing care for eight years now and we are very invested in supporting the community. We are keen to expand even further and help more local people.

“It’s been such a tough year – we’ve seen first-hand how difficult and isolating the pandemic has been for many in our community. We want local people to know we are here for them and open for care.”
