Staffordshire firefighters given lateral flow kits to perform weekly coronavirus tests

Over 400 firefighters from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service will now carry out weekly coronavirus tests at home.

The service has trained the firefighters so they can perform their own tests at home to slow down the spread of Covid-19.

The firefighters – including trainees – will then get the results within 30 minutes to see if they are free from the virus.

Over the next few weeks the fire service hopes to roll out the test to all of the staff based at its headquarters and fire stations.

Bob Preston, Covid response lead at Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We are continuing to deliver prevention activities, provide fire safety advice and support, respond to emergencies and carry out essential work with health, other emergency services, local authorities and partners to support the community during this unprecedented situation.

“I am grateful to those who are testing themselves as it provides an extra level of reassurance to our staff and their families.

“This will enhance or current Covid-secure environment, improving the safety and wellbeing of our staff. It is hoped that by using this type of test, positive cases will be identified earlier which will make it easier to control the spread of the virus.
