Stoke City fans have their say as recalled Tom Ince nets at Wigan

Tom Ince was energetic, creative and got on the scoresheet as he returned to Stoke City’s starting line-up at Wigan.

Ince, consistently linked with a move away since spending the second half of last season on loan at Luton, was in for his first taste of pre-season action in the penultimate friendly of the summer.

Wigan took the lead through Callum Lang but then Ince struck, just before the break, collecting a pass from Nick Powell and slotting past Jamie Jones.

His performance earned a slap on the back from Michael O’Neill and seemingly a few notes in the books of watching scouts.

But, with a severely trimmed senior squad, supporters have been debating on social media if he could perform a U-turn and recapture a place in O’Neill’s plans.

Ant Bunn, editor of Duck magazine, said: “Worst thing about Ince? He can play. He showed that under Rowett. But he needs to say to himself, ‘At the end of my career, have I sold myself short?’ He has huge ability at Championship level.”

Richard James said: “For all the disparaging comments, Ince is the only bomb squad player left who is a decent footballer deep down who could (and it’s a big COULD) still make an impact. Was easily our best player for a while under Rowett.”

Adam Boulton said: “Ince has definitely been our best player tonight.”

Pete O’Connell said: “I’ll always remember what Tom Ince did at Wigan away when we really, really needed him.”

Dave Proudlove said: “Ince has scored. We want 10 million quid.”
