Stoke City in ‘four-way race’ for Celtic free agent

Jonny Hayes has been linked with Stoke City again, hours after announcing he would be leaving Celtic this summer.

The 32-year-old Celtic midfielder has not been handed a new contract in Glasgow and confirmed on social media on Friday evening that he would be searching for a new club.

He has been a fringe figure at Parkhead – but has favourite status with supporters thanks to his hard-working attitude and scoring at Rangers.

Dominik Diamond, the Celtic-supporting former Gamesmaster host, said: “Jonny Hayes. I loved the guy.

“Did everything that was asked of him in the hoops almost every time he played AND that goal at Ibrox. Loved his attitude, his workrate, his character. Hope he has nothing but good things in his life and career moving on.”

Now the Daily Mail claims that Stoke manager Michael O’Neill and Preston boss Alex Neil are already on alert as they “work on targets within limited budgets”.

They add: “Hayes’s former club Aberdeen plus Cardiff City have also posted interest in recent months as they waited for Celtic to make a decision on his future.”

Hayes has spent the last three seasons with the Scottish champions, having joined them for £1m from Aberdeen in June 2017.
