BUTLAND: No chance with goal and produced decent save first half afterwards, while in the second had precious little to concern him  6

COLLINS: Out at right back and didn’t always look comfortable in such strange surroundings, but stuck at it until his withdrawal 5

MARTINS INDI: Got done over on the first-half goal before digging in to prevent any further major mishaps before being sacrificed late in the day 5

SHAWCROSS: Great to see him back, complete with menacing skinhead, and so sad to see him depart injured at the break 6

CHESTER: Got the manager’s nod and, understandably, was having to blow away a lot of cobwebs 6

SORENSEN: Surprise call up for only his third league appearance, he was full of energy and enthusiasm and deserved to be involved in goal with his right-wing corner 7

CLUCAS: Useful defensive work when called upon and set up  the Campbell effort during frustrating afternoon for one of his team’s main men 6

THOMPSON: Playing in the heart of Stoke’s midfield in the first half, but couldn’t impose himself enough to prevent him being sacrificed at the break 5

Tom Ince in the thick of the action at Reading

INCE: Cursing mis-hit, albeit under pressure, with Stoke’s best first-half chance, and could do nothing second to prolong his stay in the game 5

CAMPBELL: Hugely frustrating first half, feeding off scraps , but struck a post in the second with excellent instinctive effort 6

POWELL: Wandered around looking fruitlessly for meaningful ball first 45, placed more centrally in the second 45 but too peripheral until that late headed equaliser in the 92nd minute 7

BATTH (for Shawcross,46): Thrown into a couple of sticky situations early on before bedding himself in 6

McCLEAN:(for Thompson,46): Offered greater vigour from the left flank after the break but just lacking the end product 6

VOKES (for Ince,67): Thrown on to add some muscle to Stoke’s feeble attacking efforts and won a few headers before being involved ahead of equaliser 6

SMITH (for Collins,73): Surprise omission, he was a straight swap for the final 20 minutes to try and give Stoke some impetus down the right 5

GREGORY (for Martins Indi,84): A late throw of the dice by O’Neill 5

Subs not used:  Davies, Ward, Oakley-Boothe, Tymon.
