Stoke City player ratings vs Bournemouth – Bursik sweeps up, Vokes can’t take chance

Stoke City started the new year with a frustrating 1-0 defeat to Bournemouth. Here are the player ratings from a snowy bet365 Stadium.

Bursik: Sweeper keeper impresses again in front of the TV cameras. Quick off his line to put off Surridge and Solanke. 7

Smith: Worked hard to be an outlet down the right and was able to get in useful crosses. 6

McClean: A lot of toil at left wing-back and more came into the game in the second half. 6

Collins: A licence to break out of back three at times. Couldn’t stop Stanislas opening scoring. Vital challenge on King in injury time. 6

Chester: Got wrong side of Solanke when he clipped bar, vital flick away after Bursik clawed away Rico cross. 6

Souttar: A good test against Solanke. Keen to nip in and intercept passes and pinged a couple of pinpoint 60-yarders himself. 7

Mikel: No coincidence that Stoke look so much more fluent going forward when Mikel and Fletcher were on but a couple of slips let Bournemouth counter. 6

Thompson: Free-kick whipped into side netting and a couple of decent balls in. 6

Allen: Did well to work opening in first-half in glimpse of what he can bring to team. Less influential as game went on. 6

Powell: Led the press with a more attacking role and went close with first-half header. 6

Fletcher: Was leading the line so well when forced off again after aggravating knee injury. Adds a different dimension to Stoke attack. 7

Substitutes

Brown (for Fletcher, 25): Game and had a dip from long range at start of second half but couldn’t find the magic to panic defenders. 6

Clucas (for Thompson, 69): Brought on to add goal threat but couldn’t get into the final third. 6

Tymon (for McClean, 83): A big block to stop Stanislas after Solanke had cut in from the left. 7

Vokes (for Smith, 83): Couldn’t get a toe on late dipper from Tymon into the six-yard box. 5

Not used: Nna Noukeu, Batth, Shawcross, Oakley-Boothe, Cousins.
