Stoke City record signing ‘offered to Celtic’ as he trains on his own

Giannelli Imbula has been offered to Celtic, it is claimed in France, after limping from one saga to the next since leaving Stoke City a year ago.

Imbula had shown glimpses of world class potential when he arrived at Stoke from Porto for £18.3m almost exactly five years ago, with power and ability to drive up the pitch.

It has been claimed that Stoke could have sold him on at a profit to Juventus that summer – but he stayed and quickly fell out of favour under Mark Hughes.

He was bombed from the starting XI when the season started with one point from four games and, following a brief return in November, most of the rest of the time with Stoke was spent out on loan. Difficult spells with Toulouse and Rayo Vallecano were followed by a disastrous time at Lecce.

He left by mutual agreement in February last year and move to Sochi in Russia on a short-term deal was quickly derailed by the pandemic.

As he tried to find a new club he trained at his first, Guingamp, only to annoy his old friends – who slammed his ‘disrespectful attitude’ – to go for a trial at Nantes.

It didn’t work out at Nantes, with coach Raymond Domenech saying: “He was ok but we can’t exaggerate. What we saw of him didn’t encourage us to take him. We didn’t have room for him anyway and in our situation (fourth bottom in Ligue 1) we are looking for personalities to help us stay up. He is too quiet.”

Le Parisien claims Imbula has now gone back to train on his own near Argenteuil and “has just been proposed to Celtic”.
