Stoke sent stark financial warning amid coronavirus pandemic
Stoke City top a table that graphically illustrates the club’s huge outgoings in Championship terms.
Earlier this week the EFL announced a £50m package – divided between owed money and a loan pot – to help its clubs weather the storm provoked by the coronavirus crisis.
But finance expert Kieran Magiure warns that the money will last Stoke City – a club underpinned by the Coates family via their bet365 empire – as little as nine days because of its current expenditure.
And the best a Championship club can hope for, he says, is just under 48 days for Barnsley.
How Jack Butland is helping team-mates
Stoke number one Jack Butland says he fears for friends in the game as the coronavirus crisis bites hard and starts to hit people in the pocket.
Butland acknowledges the privileged end of the game, but says he has played with plenty of players down the years who could soon be struggling soon.
He warns that football towards the lower of the market has the same concerns as the general public.
Butland, who is Stoke’s representative for the Professional Footballers’ Association, says: “I’ve been in contact with them regarding what they are trying to do and what players are asking questions about, but we are in a situation where there’s still a lot of unknowns.”

Liverpool set big asking price for Shaqiri
Former Stoke winger Xherdan Shaqiri is being linked with a move away from Liverpool.
Shaqiri joined the Reds from Stoke in summer 2018 for around £13 million when Jurgen Klopp’s side activated a release clause in his deal at the Bet365 Stadium following relegation.
Now, according to reports from website Football Insider, Shaqiri – a favourite among Potters fans – could be on the move again this summer.
And Reds transfer supremo has put a £28m price tag on the Switzerland winger, it is said.
Stoke hero challenges ex-team mate with trick
Rory Delap has been teasing former Stoke team-mate Liam Lawrence with a rare bit of skill.
Delap has thrown down the gauntlet to Lawrence with a short video on Twitter taken in his back garden.
With what looks like one of his teenage sons gripping the cross bar of a goal with his hands and one of the uprights with his feet, Delap nonchalantly chips a ball through the small gap left between bar and post and into the top right-hand corner.
Though there is no way of knowing how many takes were needed – and the poor boy looks like he’s been hanging there for a while Rory.
