Stoke City transfer news: Blackburn Rovers and interest in Tom Edwards

Blackburn Rovers have inquired about Stoke City right back Tom Edwards.

The news comes after StokeonTrentLive’s Pete Smith revealed a trio of Championship and Premier League clubs are monitoring the 21 year old’s situation.

Now Richard Sharpe of the Lancashire Telegraph, has confirmed that Blackburn are one of those clubs.

He says: “Rovers have enquired about the availability of Stoke City right back Tom Edwards – but strengthening in central defence remains Tony Mowbray’s priority.”

He adds: “A move for a right back would be a surprise, with Ryan Nyambe the first choice in that position, though they did try and recruit in that area in January, only for a loan move for Chelsea youngster Tariq Lamptey to fall through as he opted to sign for Brighton on a permanent deal.

“However, Namibia international Nyambe is in to the final year of his deal at Ewood Park and has struggled for fitness in recent times, limited to 30 starts in the Championship last term, although the club want to tie him down to an extended deal.”

The news follows Pete Smith’s StokeonTrentLive report yesterday.

Pete wrote: “A trio of clubs in the Championship and Premier League are on alert to Tom Edwards’s status at Stoke City, with an exit seeming to loom either on loan or permanently.

“The 21-year-old right-back’s position in Michael O’Neill’s squad is vulnerable with 10 days remaining until the Championship kicks off but he is not short of admirers.

Edwards has not featured in the league since being taken off at half-time against Reading back in mid-December, with Tommy Smith emerging as O’Neill’s first choice through the rest of the season.

He was criticised for his fitness after returning from lockdown but came back for pre-season in top condition and determined to fight for his place.

“The Stafford-born defender, who has been with Stoke since he was eight and made his debut in the Premier League at 18, remains down the pecking order, however, and the option of a loan move to a Championship side would offer much-needed game time.”
