An encouraging first day at one of the Championship’s trickiest offices for Michael O’Neill and the Stoke City Class of 2020/21.
Stoke secured a goalless draw at Gary Rowett’s Millwall, who were pushing for the play-off spots last season and hope to be doing so again this term. That’s the target for Stoke as well and, indeed, Rowett suggested post-match that he expects to see them in the right half of the table this time.
It was a match of few chances but there was debate at the end when Jacob Brown appeared to be fouled by Shaun Hutchinson only to be shown the yellow card for simulation rather than be awarded a penalty.
Off the pitch, a lot of players were not involved at all – and O’Neill admits there is a lot of work to be done ahead of the transfer deadline.
