Council tenant Kevin Dunn says his flat is ‘riddled with damp’ – because of a hole in the roof of the nine-storey tower block where he lives.
The 60-year-old has lived on the top floor of Boundary Court, in Hanley, for the past six years and says many of his neighbours have got the same problem.
He says he has damp in his kitchen – and now his bedroom.
He said: “When the wind and rain blows from the south the windows leak so you have rivers running down your wall.
“There is black mould and all of the window seals have gone so it is drafty. Every flat in the block is the same.
“The roof above the top floor stairwell is leaking and it cascades down the stairs.
“The council has been told about this time and time again – and you get the impression they don’t want to do it.
“You can’t decorate because the damp ruins your paper and paint. They are absolutely disgusting and terrible.”
Kevin says Stoke-on-Trent City Council has not carried out any repairs on the tower block for at least two years – except to keep water out of the lift.
He added: “The council sent drones up to see what was going on and we heard nothing back. People are sick of it.
“With this black mould I have to keep wiping it down with bleach because I have health problems with diabetes.
“Other residents have health conditions too but the council just doesn’t want to know and it’s getting worse every year. We just keep getting fobbed off.
“You would be ashamed to bring anybody in with the state of our flats.
“I don’t know what they are going to do but there is water dripping onto the electrics. When it rains it puddles on the top and goes down the stairs like a waterfall. Nothing ever gets done.”
The council says it has a ‘rolling programme of maintenance and repairs’ across its 18,000-plus homes in the city.
Councillor Carl Edwards, cabinet member for housing, said: “This work has already involved a multi-million pound investment bringing improvements to a number of high-rise accommodation blocks.
“Housing officers have been to visit Mr Dunn to examine the issues he is experiencing. We have a specific programme of roofing and associated works this year that will see £2m invested in our housing stock.
“We are planning further works to the roofing in our accommodation blocks and this is a large-scale project which is being looked at for the coming months.”
