‘Stronger’ – John Askey on Tom Conlon’s Port Vale progress

John Askey says he’s delighted by Tom Conlon’s progress as Port Vale prepare for the 2020/21 season.

Midfielder Conlon scored twice from the penalty spot in the 2-1 win at home to Rochdale on Saturday, but the 24 year old’s all-round performance also impressed.

Conlon seems to be continuing where he left off at the end of last season when, having come back from injury, he got a run in the side when on-loan Nottingham Forest midfielder Jake Taylor was injured in January.

Askey says Conlon did his case no harm with his performance at the weekend.

He said: “I think Tom has got stronger from when he came back from his injury. He’s continued that from in pre- season, so hopefully that bodes well for the start of the season. He’s an important player for us now.

“He is playing further forward and is being more positive. When I first saw him play he tended to go back a lot when he got the ball but now he is playing more advanced and causing teams more problems.

“You want him in the final third because he is a good finisher, a good passer and he wins us the ball back high up the pitch because he is a good tackler. I am pleased for Tom and he looks as though he is enjoying it.”
