The financial forecast that will worry Stoke City owners and fans

Stoke City top a table that graphically illustrates the club’s huge outgoings in Championship terms.

Earlier this week the EFL announced a £50m package Рdivided between owed money and a loan pot Рto help its clubs weather the storm provoked by the coronavirus crisis.

But finance expert Kieran Magiure warns that the money will last Stoke City – a club underpinned by the Coates family via their bet365 empire – as little as nine days because of its current expenditure.

And the best a Championship club can hope for, he says, is just under 48 days for Barnsley (see table).

“Based on their most recent wage levels,” says Maguire, “this is how long it will take (in days) for Championship clubs to consume the advances and grants given by the EFL, and that’s ignoring other costs incurred by clubs.”

Here’s his table…
