‘The only way’ – John Askey on Port Vale’s odds for promotion

John Askey isn’t reading too much into the bookmakers’ odds despite Port Vale being made among the favourites to reach the play-offs.

The Vale are joint-sixth favourites to win the League Two title, putting them behind Bolton, Salford, Mansfield, Exeter and Tranmere, and level on 16/1 with Cheltenham, Bradford and Forest Green.

That reflects the strides made in the last campaign as Askey led the team to an eighth-placed finish, just one point outside the play-off spots when the campaign was suspended in March.

The odds are a change for the Vale who had been battling relegation for three years before Askey had them challenging for the play-offs in his first full season.

He joked: “I prefer it when they say we are 20th!

“You don’t know until you start the season. If you look to the odds last season, the teams who should have been up there ended up near the bottom, the likes of Scunthorpe and Mansfield. So, you can’t read too much into it.

“We just have to try to get back to where we were and keep improving. That is the only way.”

He says, whatever Vale achieve this season, will be through hard work in what he expects to be a closely contested division.

He added: “You take one game and, if you play well you take confidence from it, if you lose you move on to the next one. That’s how we will treat the season, just try to keep improving.

“You don’t know how other teams are going to perform. Certain clubs have new managers in and players have changed completely at most teams. I don’t think there is that much between any of the teams.

“I just think it is about getting that consistency and working hard every game.”
