Then & Now: Remembering Hanley before the ring road


Now a distant memory, in the black and white picture taken in 1985 a once popular Hanley shoe repair shop can be seen.

Thomas Jones, of Weston Road, Meir, who sent in the photograph, said: “The A Thomas shoe repair shop was a local landmark before it was demolished in the mid-80s.

“It was situated at the junction of Meigh Street, Hillcrest Street and Old Hall Street, in Hanley.

“The building to the left was a church, and the large building to the right is still standing.

“The buildings were cleared to make way for the Potteries ring road.”

Today’s view of the same location shows the busy Potteries Way. But look closer and you will notice a small building with a pointed roof and a green door that has survived to this day.
