An 89-year-old man has become the third patient to die at Stoke-on-Trent’s main hospital after testing positive for coronavirus.
It has emerged that the patient lost his fight for life at the Royal Stoke University Hospital last Friday.
But his death was only confirmed by the authorities last night.
Now Royal Stoke medical director John Oxtoby has issued a statement following the latest death.

He said: “Sadly, we can confirm that a patient who was being cared for at Royal Stoke University Hospital, and had tested positive for COVID-19, has died.
“The patient had underlying health conditions and died on Friday, March 20.
“His family has been informed and our thoughts and condolences are with them at this difficult and distressing time.”
Latest figures show there have been 97 confirmed coronavirus cases in Staffordshire and 12 in Stoke-on-Trent.
