This dental surgery is using social media to give patients oral hygiene tips during lockdown

A North Staffordshire dental surgery has been going the extra mile for its patients throughout the lockdown period by offering free oral hygiene tips through social media as well as giving out care packs.

Millennium Dentistry, in Tape Street, Cheadle, wanted to continue to care for patients – albeit in a different way – when they had to close their doors due to the pandemic.

Dentists Manhar and Aradhna Segal, from Trentham, are joint owners of the practice. With the help of their children they put together 100 care packages for their patients.

The practice has now been nominated for an Our Heroes Award in the People First category.

Manhar said: “Since we were not allowed to see any patients and only give advice or refer our patients for urgent treatment we grew very concerned.

“We got increasingly concerned about our elderly and vulnerable patients, some of whom live alone, which prompted us to make and distribute these care packs allowing us to make sure that they were okay. For a lot of them, it’s the only real contact they’ve had in a long time.”

Manhar, 48, and Aradhna, 47, opened their practice 20 years ago and regard their patients as their ‘extended family’.

In the care packs they included dental hygiene essentials such as toothpaste and a toothbrush as well as comfort items like tea, coffee and hot chocolate.

The bags featured the message ‘stay home, stay safe’ as well as a rainbow.

Millennium Dentistry has also been using social media as a tool to connect with patients during these difficult times.

Manhar said: “The videos that we produced were hints and self-help tips regarding dental problems during lockdown, but also general advice on how to achieve and maintain good oral health for the benefit of our registered and non-registered patients during lockdown.

“We thought it would be useful to link this with good oral health in terms of oral hygiene and dietary choices as a way of preventing dental problems.”
