Three men ‘deliberately cough in face’ of shopper wearing mask in supermarket

A woman wearing a face mask as she did her weekly shop has told how three men ‘deliberately coughed in her face’.

The asthma sufferer was inside a Congleton supermarket when the incident unfolded earlier today (March 19).

She revealed three men pushed past her as they made ‘exaggerated’ coughing noises.

To add insult to injury, another man then quizzed her over her decision to cover her face at the till.

The latest incident comes as a man claiming to be infected with coronavirus was arrested today for apparently deliberately coughing on shop workers.

In a post on Facebook, the woman said: “Three grown men pushed past me in the supermarket pretending exaggerating coughing because I had a face mask covered with a scarf on.

“Then another man said to me at the checkout don’t know why you’re bothering with that if you’re going die you’re going die!

“So just to put it out there, maybe I had it on because I have asthma and don’t want to cough on anyone!”

Meanwhile, BirminghamLive reports that a 57-year-old man was detained following a number of 999 calls from High Street, Dudley, yesterday (March 18).

He was held after workers suspected a man was shoplifting and, when confronted, he coughed on them.

An eyewitness alleged the suspect ‘was laughing’ during the incident.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: “A 57-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of theft and assault earlier this afternoon in Dudley.

“It’s understood he coughed on staff who suspected he was shoplifting, and claimed to be infected with coronavirus.

“He was arrested by officers on Dudley High Street after several people called to report what happened.

“The man, who is from Dudley and has suspected mental health issues, has been taken into custody and will be questioned in due course.

“Those affected have been given appropriate advice and referred to the non-emergency NHS helpline for further support and guidance.”
