Thug John Hall repeatedly punched and kicked a homeless man as he lay helpless outside a South Cheshire shopping precinct.
The vicious attack took place Saturday, May 16 outside the Bridestones Shopping Centre in Congleton while the victim was seeking shelter.
Security footage presented to South Cheshire Magistrates Court in Crewe showed 50-year-old Hall punch and kick his victim while he lay on the floor.
Hall, of John Street in Macclesfield, has now been jailed for 18 months after pleading guilty to assault by beating.
Magistrates felt Hall had to serve an immediate custodial sentence due to the severity of the attack.
Police officers have today welcomed the sentence.
Police Constable Iain Bell, who led the investigation on behalf of Cheshire Police, said: “Hall’s actions were simply despicable and I welcome the sentence that has been handed to him.
“This was a totally unprovoked attack and at no point did the victim retaliate in anyway.
“Thankfully, despite Hall’s actions, the victim was able to escape the attack with just minor injuries, although the outcome could have been far worse.”
Cheshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner David Keane hopes the result can reassure families that officers will take tackle crime in the area.
He added: “Incidents of this nature are particularly distressing and I hope that this sentencing will provide some closure for the victim and reassurance for the local community.”
