‘Top three?’ Port Vale fans have their say on impressive start to the season

Port Vale have won their opening two league games – and four out of their first five games in 2020/21 in all competitions.

Fans have been having their say after John Askey’s team continued their impressive start to the season with Saturday’s 2-0 victory at Exeter City.

Andrew Blakemore : “Now that was a perfect away day. It may well be said several times this season, days like today make even more of a shame that things are not back to normal. A great performance to a man, the words put a shift perfectly sum up today.

“It was always going to be tough against an Exeter team who had not lost at home in the league in 12 months, but we deserved that.

“We had said in pre-season, if we can finish above Exeter then we surely will end up in the play-offs and today was a great test of how things have gone since pre-season and the return of football.

“Tom Conlon with a goal of the season contender already, and his quick feet and thinking for Devante Rodney’s good run and goal to make it 2-0, gave him Man of the Match in my eyes, but there were some contenders.

“I never thought I’d enjoy watching the Vale from my own home so much!”

Rob Rhead : “After last week’s debacle with iFollow I wasn’t expecting to be able to watch this game seeing as I would be attending Beardy Folk Festival.

“Turns out you can get 4G in the middle of a South Shropshire field. The first 15 minutes were all Exeter whose passing game at times was very effective against a Vale side looking resplendent in finest green.

“It looked like the Vale’s best chance of scoring was from a set-piece and so it proved with another Tom Conlon special.

“Vale grew in confidence but too many balls from defence were long and conceded possession. However, defensive duties were carried out well enough to deny the home side too many chances and the one time they were beaten Scott Brown wasn’t.

“Exeter pressed in the second half but the Vale stood firm and it was fortuitous that Devante Rodney had replaced Mark Cullen up front on 70 minutes as two minutes later his pace was instrumental in the Vale’s second.

“No doubt there will be complaints from Exeter that they should have had a free-kick seconds before and I have some sympathy. It’s early days but the continuation of last season’s undefeated run will have people taking notice.”

Sean A Williamson : “We were brilliant, especially in the first half. Conlon looks like he’s going to be a key player this season. Make sure he and Joyce play every week, then one of Manny, Burgess and Whitehead alongside them.

“This is one of the strongest squads we’ve had in years. People might have said last week “its only Crawley,” but here  we took down one of the top teams in the division, and did it with ease. I think Salford will win the division, sadly, but from what I’ve seen so far, we’re easily good enough to finish top three.”

Phil Potts: “Amazing performance, we didn’t look the final product but still made the play-off finalists look ordinary. Great performances from Conlon, Legge, Worrall, Joyce, Rodney, Brown…. in fact who do you leave out?

“It’s early doors but I think the rest of the league will be more bothered about playing us than we will about playing them. Long may it continue!”

Jason Condliffe: “Cracking game- I thought Roders, Manny, Conlon, Fitzpatrick and Scott Brown were quality but all of the team chipped in and played fantastic against a very strong and difficult Exeter side.”

Richard Lockett : “Travelling down to Cornwall for holiday, we had Radio Devon on. They said Manny was excellent in the first half and they could have no complaints. Vale were more streetwise than Exeter were the main comments.”
