‘Touch of class’ – Stoke City player ratings after comfortable win over Cardiff City

Manager Michael O’Neill resisted changes for the big game against Cardiff City despite three defeats in four for Stoke heading into the game.

Here’s how we rated them after a pretty comfortable and hugely important 2-0 victory…

BUTLAND: Safe under the high ball, not least an intended cross he had to tip over late in the day to ensure a welcome clean sheet 7

SMITH: Offered himself a lot going forward, particularly second half, and ensured there were no mishaps defensively at the other end 7

MARTINS INDI: Solid and dependable, looked far more comfortable than seven days earlier 7

BATTH: Noticeably got his head to a fair bit of aerial ammunition coming Stoke’s way to keep Cardiff frustrated 7

CHESTER: Far more comfortable than seven days earlier as he remained pretty much in control throughout 7

THOMPSON: Retained his place, but in front of the back four this time, where he remained a composed and reliable figure, while his set pieces deliveries weren’t too shoddy either 8

ALLEN: Anyone would think he was a Swansea lad, judging by his effort, so imagine how sweet that goal was for him  8

2-0… Joe Allen touches home Stoke’s second

CLUCAS: First-half pass for Campbell was De Bruynesque as he offered a touch of class on the day 8

INCE: Showed some welcome tenacity and purpose second half to try and seal that all-important second goal 7

POWELL: Not afraid to put himself about physically, including the first-half goal, and showed his usual quota of neat touches in open play 8

CAMPBELL: Got himself into several useful goalscoring positions and would have popped at least one away on another day 7

COUSINS (for Powell,81): A late insurance policy at 2-0 up 6

COLLINS (for Thompson,85): Even later insurance policy 6

GREGORY (for Campbell,89): Late chance for a slice of glory 6

Subs not used: Davies, Vokes, Oakley-Boothe,  Tymon.
