Champion trainer Paul Nicholls gave himself a chance of retaining his title after a treble — led by Midlands National winner Truckers Lodge — enabled him to almost half chief rival Nicky Henderson’s lead.

The 6-1 shot, ridden by Lorcan Williams, pulled 18 lengths clear of Captain Drake at Uttoxeter.

Having finished second in the Welsh National on his previous run, Truckers Lodge could now be aimed at the Scottish National at Ayr on April 18, with the 2021 Grand National his biggest target.

Nicholls said: ‘He’s not very big but he is improving rapidly. I am delighted for Lorcan. He has missed out on a few rides because of recent abandonments and was getting a bit depressed. But I said to him, ‘‘Don’t worry, Truckers Lodge is there for you’’.’

Nicholls started the day just over £290,000 behind Henderson but cut that advantage by £130,000 with McFabulous and Fidelio Vallis winning at Kempton.

Nicholls said his dual King George VI Chase winner, Clan Des Obeaux, will not go for the Cheltenham Gold Cup again.
