Unbeaten run could put Port Vale boss on manager of the month shortlist

Port Vale boss John Askey has a strong case to be shortlisted for the manager of the month award after his side went unbeaten throughout February.

The shortlist of four managers is expected to be announced this week – and Askey would be unlucky not to be included, even though the Vale dropped two points when Scunthorpe’s 90th-minute leveller forced a 2-2 draw at Vale Park on Saturday.

Cheltenham boss Michael Duff should be favourite after his side won six and lost one game in February, a run that’s taken them up to fourth in the table and set up a mouth-watering game at home to the Vale on Saturday.

Other possibles include Cambridge manager  Mark Bonner whose team enjoyed four wins, one draw and just one defeat.

Crewe boss Dave Artell could also be in the running after four wins, a draw and a defeat, while Swindon’s Richie Wellens could be in contention after his side won three and drew one of their four games in the month.

No doubt Askey will be more concerned about preparing for Saturday’s game than the announcement of this week’s shortlist.

Vale go into the game on a seven-match unbeaten run, and won at Cheltenham in the FA Cup in November.

However, the Robins are the form team of the division. Their 2-0 win at Colchester on Saturday did Vale a favour as Askey’s side climbed above the Essex side and into the play-off spots.
