Forest Green are the latest League Two club to announce their retained list now the regular season has been ended.
The Gloucestershire club are releasing eight players: Dayle Grubb, Elliott Frear, Farrend Rawson, George Williams, Junior Mondal, Kevin Dawson, Liam Shepherd and Matt Mills.
Wales international forward Williams broke his leg on the opening day of this past season. He had played three games into his comeback when the season was cut short because of the coronavirus crisis in March.
The 24 year old made 17 appearances for Fulham before signing for Forest Green at the end of his contract in 2018.
Port Vale announced their own retained list on May 18. Will Atkinson, Callum Evans, Kieran Kennedy, Ryan Lloyd, Jonny Maddison and Jordan Macfarlane-Archer were released while David Amoo, Shaun Brisley, Rhys Browne, Tom Conlon, Mark Cullen, Cristian Montano and Nathan Smith were offered new deals.
League Two clubs officially ended the regular season last week at an EFL vote. But they had already agreed three weeks earlier to call the campaign to a halt because clubs couldn’t afford to play their remaining nine games.
They would have been faced with the cost of testing players, estimated at £125,000 – £140,000 per club, plus the cost of bringing players and staff off the government’s furlough scheme.
Vale have been praised for putting the financial needs of the division above their own interests by also voting to end the campaign.
They were just one point outside the play-off spots when the campaign was suspended and so missed out when the play-off spots were decided on points per game.
Those play-off matches will take place behind closed doors, with the first legs on Thursday.
Colchester are at home to Exeter (5.15pm), before Northampton entertain Cheltenham (7.45pm).
The second legs are planned for next Monday with the final at Wembley on June 29.
