Warning about scam text threatening people with fines for breaking restrictions

The public are being warned about a scam text being sent to people claiming they have been outside too often during the COVID-19 restrictions.

The message, which has been sent to the people in the area, says people need to pay a fine after being reported for leaving their homes more than three times in the space of a day.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council said there was also a link sent with the message that they believed was a malicious link.

They added: “Do not click on links in unsolicited text messages.

“Although these text messages are scams, you should follow the Government advice and only leave the house if absolutely necessary. Police will soon be issuing fines to people that are not following the advice.

“If you think you have been a victim of fraud, contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or visit their website at  http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/

“For further information, or to report a similar scam, contact the Citizens Advice consumer service on 0808 233 1133.

“Please be aware that it may take longer for your calls to be answered during this difficult time.”
