Former Stoke City midfielder Liam Lawrence has joined the chorus of praise for the club after the “incredible” £10m donation to staff and patients at Royal Stoke and County Hospital, via the Denise Coates Foundation, to help during the coronavirus crisis.
“What a family, what a city, what a club, and people ask why I have settled round here and won’t move. This is just incredible I’m lost for words,” said Lawrence on Twitter.
“Stoke City – you wouldn’t think of them as being one of the big players of football,” he said.
“They’ve got wealthy owners and the owners have not only committed to do five months, I believe, of full pay for all staff but they have also donated £10 million to the local NHS which is an amazing gesture.
“I think it’s the Coates family. They are very wealthy, but you know what? A lot of wealthy people are stepping up and a lot of wealthy people are not stepping up.”
