Youth duo called up to Stoke City squad as Michael O’Neill names team v Barnsley

Michael O’Neill has made one change to his starting XI and promoted a youth duo to his bench as Stoke City take on Barnsley.

John Obi Mikel replaces Joe Allen in midfield and reclaims the captain’s armband as O’Neill freshens things up in a busy and tricky run of fixtures – hoping that Stoke can win three league games in a row for the first time since 2016.

Centre-back Will Forrester, aged 19, and centre-forward Christian Norton, also 19, are named as substitutes after Sam Clucas and James McClean pulled out of training yesterday. Rabbi Matondo is also injured but hoping to return to training next week.

Stoke arrive on the back of home victories over Sheffield Wednesday and Luton – but are level on points with Barnsley, who have won three games on the spin themselves.

You can follow the match (7pm kick-off) live from Oakwell, here.

Michael O’Neill said in his pre-game press conference: “Clearly just from the results you said, a tough one. They’re a team who have done very well in the league this season and have given most teams a good task. We drew 2-2 at home and were hindered by the red card (retrospectively overturned for Nathan Collins). I still think we had enough to win that game but I think they’ve improved since then.

“They’re a high energy team, a team that likes to press you and make you make mistakes, particularly in your own half. We have to be ready for that and try to be at our best to win the game.

Nothing surprises me in this league. When you look at results at times, teams can go on various little runs at different times of the season and teams can fall into a lull and struggle.

“Barnsley, certainly since the new manager came in, have done very, very well. They’ve adapted to the style he wants to play and it’s been very, very effective for them.

“I think they also have a lot of players in their squad who are really keen to prove themselves at this level. That’s a nice thing to have. Hungry players who are keen to do well. We certainly have to match their appetite for the game.”
